One of the oldest and most prestigious surf camps in the Maldives, Cokes Surf Camp aka ‘Cokes’ is known for it’s prime position to accessing epic waves. For months on end, palm trees sway in unison to the balmy offshore winds whilst cobalt coloured drop offs meet sparkling sapphire shorelines, creating perfect almond shape barrels.
Like lefts. You’re in luck. Prefer rights? Argh the old goofy vs. natural debate. Thankfully Cokes Surf Camp can settle this one quite easily as it is positioned conveniently between two perfect left and right hand breaks. Cokes, a punchy right hand break, is just a mere walk through a bush and over a seemingly, well, dodgy little wooden footbridge that’s seen better days – a must to walk over and great to photograph!
Don’t fret goofy footers, Chickens is just a five-minute boat ride away, across the channel between Thulusdhoo Island and Chickens Island. You will be greeted with perfect lefts that hug the reef bottom and run the entire way through to the island. Get chickens on a good day and it’s not rare to surf a wave 100m. I’d have to say one of my favourite waves and I surf with my left foot forward.
Wake up, gaze out the window or stroll onto the veranda. Brace yourself for sunrises over the water, perfect barrels and more palm trees than you would have applied zinc cream. Need I say more?
Cokes has it’s own in house chef, cooking scrumptious hearty meals (big servings may I add) that are definitely well earned after an extensive day in the water. From local rice and noodle dishes, to fish and chips, home cooked tuna burritos or my favourite breakfast meal, French toast, ‘Krkr’ (car-car) meaning ‘cook,’ will not disappoint.
$110 per person will get you a room with an ensuite at this waterfront surf camp plus three meals a day.
The waves aren’t good enough, the water not blue enough nor the view pretty enough said no surfer who has ever graced Cokes Surf Camp. You will be in for great waves, a very relaxing stay and maybe even a sneaky barrel or two. Soak up the relaxing atmosphere, meet other surfers, travellers and the friendly locals and you have the perfect surf trip. Staying at Cokes is bound to leave you with an epic tan, fond memories and picture perfect photographs that will leave your mates back home with a serious case of surf trip envy.
