28th December 2015
We woke early this morning to a rainy overcast day. Not to have our East Coast Road Trip spirits dampened, we decided to check out the beautiful Lake Macquarie. What I didn’t know is that it’s one of Australia’s largest salt water lakes, measuring four times the size of Sydney Harbour. We strapped on our running shoes and ran 5km around the Swansea side of the lake in the refreshing morning rain. After sitting in a car all day yesterday and knowing today would be much of the same, it felt great to be out amongst nature early on in the morning.
If the sun had of been shining, it would have been perfect for an early morning kayak, jetski ride or paddleboard. We were imagining just how pretty this place would be minus the rain.
Our lunch stop was just up the road a little in Newcastle. We checked out Bar Beach where we stuck to our original road trip pack of being healthy, and we ate yummy pumpkin and salad wraps beachside.
The drive continued and on we went another four hours. As the onshore wind was up again we decided our chances of surfing today were slim. Our plan was to head up the coast a little more and maybe stop at some of our wishlist surf spots like Treachery, Foster, Crowdy Head and Port Macquarie on the trip home. Fingers crossed the surf conditions will be more in our favour then. We drove a total of four hours today and found it a little tricky to score last minute accommodation. We are staying a little inland tonight as were were disappointed to learn Crescent Head, Hats Head and South West Rocks are all fully booked. That’s life and going with the flow of travels is all a part of it.
We did manage to score a famous Fredos Pie for dinner in Kempsy and both agree the beef and Mushroom is a definite must. The Beef Stroganoff is also a winner. And we both agreed to end the day with a cold frothie.
